internet marketing trends
Now more than ever you need to keep abreast of internet marketing trends
This is going to shock you, but hopefully it will also help you understand why sometimes you can’t do everything yourself when it comes to running a business, whether an eCommerce business or a local business with a website.
Let us split the last 70 years into two periods of 35 years. The first period will cover 1945 – 1980 and the second from 1981 – 2015 (today).
Now in the first period, 1945 – 1980 what do you think were the most revolutionary aspects of retailing and marketing? Well it is not too difficult to come up with answers if you are of a certain age. Where retailing was concerned, the barcode was the most revolutionary change, making stock control and checkout procedures infinitely easier and quicker.
Of course for those of you who think that barcodes should have been invented years earlier, remember what is used to read them – yes, a laser, which was only developed in the 1950s and could only be reproduced on an affordable basis many years later.
Curiously, mail order has been with us since the latter years of the nineteenth century, though the actual expression has now changed to online purchasing. No longer do we wait for a catalogue to arrive, mark off what we want to buy, complete an order form, post it off, and then wait 14 days for the items to arrive.
Today we just type www. Click on a few menu options and then hit ‘order now’, and if the item we ordered is not delivered to our doorstep within 48 hours, we feel hard done by.
Mail order is a perfect example of how our lives are becoming revolutionised and today it is all happening so rapidly. For 100 years mail order sufficed, until in 1995 Amazon.com was founded, the online store that revolutionised the way we buy goods today.
In 20 years we have gone from the first online order to paying for goods with smartphones. Who would have believed it if you had told them when mobile phones first hit the streets that we would be using them to shop with within a generation?
Business is changing and the way we do business is also changing, which means you need to change too. While 5 years ago we might have been telling you how important it was that your website was designed to be more eye-catching and have lots of content, today we still want your web design to be as eye catching, but content reduced to a bare minimum for the benefit of the ‘mobile’ browser.
That means reorganising content, eliminating ‘fluff’ and accentuating calls to action with inviting buttons to click on.
Websites are becoming more and more interactive, and here at papersky we know the way trends are heading and want to help you stay one step ahead of changes, giving you a head-start on your competitors.
This doesn’t mean you have to revamp your whole website every couple of years, but it is certainly worth considering giving it an annual MOT just to make sure you are adapting to changing trends. Why not give us a call and have a chat with us, we don’t bite and we genuinely are here to help you?
